Characters

Tall for a non-woody plant, this perennial sometimes reaches 2m in height. Freely-branching, the branches bear scale-like leaves from which short branches emerge from their axils. Flowers are tiny, greenish white and clustered 1–3 at the branch nodes. They appear in June, producing reddish berries later in the summer.

Used For

May be cooked as domestic asparagus. Cultivated asparagus often escapes or persists after cultivation, becoming wild and growing without cultivation.
