Latin name

Gaylussacia dumosa; Gaylussacia baccata

Characters

A freely branching shrub to 30cm in height. Its leaves are ovate and smooth around the edges. They end in a sharp point, an extension of the midrib. Both huckleberry species are unique in that the leaves are covered with tiny resin dots, giving them the appearance of being gold dusted. The flowers are five-parted and whitish producing bristly shiny black fruit. Seeds number 10, differentiating them from blueberries.

Used For

Can be used the same as blueberries in any number of recipes. They are sweet. May resemble chokeberry, but that shrub has toothed leaves and glands along the midrib.
