All are shrubs with opposite leaves, which may be heart-shaped, three-lobed or lance-shaped with a prominent white midrib. Flowers are borne in a cyme and are generally white; may have two types of flowers, differing in appearance. Fruit is red or purple

Generally in shade: cool forests, along streams, in ravines, or in wet soils lakeside

Northern except for Wild Raisin which is throughout

Used For

Fruit of some is good raw but sweetens after frost. May be cooked in jams, jellies, desserts. Seeds are large so better strained. High bush cranberries are sour and best used like cranberries. Fruit leather or dried fruit are equally good.
