Characters

Difficult to identify to species due to hybridization. Leaves are simple, serrated on the edge and alternate along the stem. Flowers are white to pink, with petals, sepals and styles occurring in fives. Stamens usually number 20. Fruit is a pome, like the apple, producing 10 seeds. It bears a crown at the end. Often the flowers emerge in cymes or racemes, before the leaves have expanded.

Habitat

Some are seen along the edges of forests, fields or wetlands. Others grow in acidic peaty soils. Sandy, stony soils host other species.

At least one species is found throughout the province.

Used For

Fruit may be sweet or tart. Useful in baked goods, puddings, breads and even pemmican. Delicious in pancakes. Seeds are slightly bitter,but that disappears with cooking.
