Characters

A low-growing sprawling annual, it has greenish or yellowish stems and toothed alternate leaves, Flowers are four-petalled and mauve in colour, the petals widest at the ends. They produce capsules with two unequal sections. The lower one is persistent and has only one or no seeds. The upper section is deciduous with four angles.

Entire plant. Older parts should be boiled; young leaves and stems and immature pods may be consumed raw.

Beaches and beach cobble on brackish or coastal shores
