Shrubby low-growing plant with no stem. Plant has 3–5 leaves arising directly from the root. Flowers borne usually below the leaves in a spherical head.

Some recipes may contain sassafras. This plant and its extract should not be used. Anecdotally, I have read that it is carcinogenic. So use a recipe without. It does not grow in Nova Scotia.
