Characters

Low-growing shrubs, their leaves are deciduous and toothed along the edges. Their fall colours are stunning crimson and orange-red. Plants are colonial and produce pinkish-white bell shaped flowers borne in racemes. Fruits are greenish berries, ripening through red and eventually a glaucous blue with darker markings. Seeds number 20 or more.

Recipe

Blueberry grunt: 3 cups fresh blueberries,1 cup white sugar Dumpling: 1/2 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice, 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons butter, 1 cup milk. Line 13 inch pan with berries and top with sugar. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add the milk, all at once and mix only until moistened. Drop by spoonfuls into the simmering berries. Bake at 350˚ F for 30 minutes or until browned lightly.
