Characters

One of only 2 NS shrubs with opposite, pinnately divided leaves. Their edges are saw-toothed. The black elderberries and their flowers are borne in a flat-topped umbrella-shaped cluster, with 5 rays. The red elder is distinguished by the pyramidal shape of the clusters of red berries.. There is a central axis to the inflorescence.

Fruit is delicious in jams, and jellies; often dried and added to wines to increase tannins

Cautions

Some sources state that the seeds of the red elder contain cyanide and should not be eaten. Others dismiss the presence as miniscule and not likely to cause reactions.
