Chokeberry

Characters

Colonial in nature, these freely branching shrubs produce simple, ovate or oblong leaves, with tiny teeth around the edges. Chokeberries can be separated from all other shrubs by the row of reddish glands down the centre of the leaves' top surface. Flowers are pinkish or white with five five petals and sepals, appearing in May. There are red or black-fruited species, the fruit maturing in July and August.
