American Black Currant

Characters

A woody shrub, it produces arching stems with few branches. This currant is mostly smooth. The stems are grey, winged, turning reddish at the base as they age. Young shoots are green before they turn brown. Leaves are orbicular but lobed with 3–5 toothed lobes They are dark green and often wrinkled, but not bristly. Lower surfaces of the leaves are lighter and hairy, as are the petioles.

Delicious in jams, jellies and pies. Even used to flavour black tea.
